Article: How to Layer Necklaces

How to Layer Necklaces

#1 Necklace Length

Essential for a pretty layered look

The first thing to consider when layering necklaces is choosing the right lengths. You want to choose different lengths to achieve a nice cascading effect. Start with measuring the base of your neck, then add 2 inches in order to get your first necklace length. For the next layers, a good rule of thumb is to have at least 2in between each necklace.

We created a guide of the most common sizes and how different lengths will lay based on your neck size.

#2 Mix & Match Chains

Mix delicate chains with chunkier ones

Mixing different textures makes your layered stack more interesting, while also reducing tangling! Consider using flat chains like, Figaro, curb or Cuban link chains. They're perfect for layering since they don’t roll as much.

DON'T limit yourself to dainty chains. Layering only with them will lead to annoying tangles.

#3 Add Pendants

Top layer pendants

Mini pendants such as solitaire or pavé crystals should always go on top. This starts a roadmap for a beautiful cascading effect that draws attention to each piece.

Wider pendants such as crystal bars or nameplates are fantastic middle layers, but can also great top layer. Their wide shape helps frame your neckline and adds variation to the overall look.

#4 The Anchor Layer

Larger pendants for the bottom layer

Lockets, discs, vertical pendants and lariats are great to complete your layering set. They provide a solid foundation for your necklace stack and bring the entire look together.
