That’s why it’s so important to use hand sanitizer often, especially when you’re grocery shopping, touching doorknobs, or even opening mail. If you kill germs before they enter your body, you have a better chance of staying healthy and reducing the spread of illness.
As opposed to hand-washing (which is also a great defense against viruses), sanitizers are popular because they kill germs almost instantly, even when you’re on-the-go — no soap and water needed. But it turns out, this convenient germ-killer could be causing harm to your favorite jewelry with each use.
That’s why we’re introducing our specially-formulated Hand Sanitizer Spray that’s safe for skin, jewelry, and most surfaces, too.
What was the inspiration behind spray sanitizer?
We discovered that there was no jewelry-safe sanitizer during the COVID-19 pandemic. As founder Gina Nam continued AMYO operations, she was using hand sanitizer constantly and noticed her rings and bracelets were fading faster than usual. That’s when she realized that the products she was using on her hands were causing her jewelry to dull, and she wanted to find a solution.
After researching the components of hand sanitizers, we learned that many common ingredients can damage or tarnish jewelry with frequent use. So, we formulated the Sanitizing Spray to help you keep your hands clean without dulling or damaging your beloved bracelets, rings, and all your precious baubles.
Why is this Sanitizing Spray different?
Common ingredients in conventional hand sanitizers contain chemicals that can wear down the gold plating with repeated use. So, if the gold plating on your jewelry normally fades in 6 months, repeated use of the sanitizers will shorten that lifespan to 2-3 months.
Our Sanitizing Spray is formulated with gentle ingredients that kill germs, not jewelry. The main ingredients it contains are isopropyl alcohol, organic glycerin, purified water, and essential oils for safe and residue-free cleaning.
What types of jewelry are affected by hand sanitizer?
All metals can be affected by hand sanitizer … even the expensive ones! When you use most hand sanitizers frequently, all metals — sterling silver, platinum, gold vermeil, solid gold — and polished gemstones will eventually start to lose their luster.
Additionally, certain foods and products, as well as frequent hand washing, can wear down jewelry, as well. Foods with high levels of acidity can tarnish the jewelry you’re wearing, so it’s best to remove your rings and bracelets before doing any kind of food prep or cooking. Household cleaning products can also contain corrosive ingredients like sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, that does not react well with metals.
How often can I use this spray sanitizer / When should I use it?
Because our spray sanitizer is organic, vegan, and cruelty-free, you don’t have to worry about chemical exposure to yourself, your family, or your jewelry and you can use it as often as you want! While isopropyl alcohol can be drying on its own, the organic glycerin helps to add moisture back into your hands. (A common ingredient in other hand sanitizers is aloe, but it can leave a sticky film on your jewelry).

TEA TREE: We combine tea tree oil with peppermint, lavender, and eucalyptus oils for a fresh, invigorating, minty scent that can also boost immunity.
SANDALWOOD: A concoction of sandalwood oil, Benzoin Oil, Cedar Wood Oil, Vanilla Oil, and Bergamot Oil create an earthy aroma that quiets the mind and facilitates restful sleep.
